DEVELOPMENT / Glen Doman: From birth to six years (from the book "Harmonious development of the child")

All that can come out of this child, is defined by the first six years of his life. And nobody understands this better than the kids. That is why they are so in a hurry and tools prefer toys. None of the children had never been invented toys, which cannot be said about the tools. Give the little boy some stick and you can be sure that in his hands it becomes not a Golf club or hockey, as in a hammer or a shovel. And, of course, to practice the use of the new tool, he or isolated your new table, or pericopae bed of flowers. Give a little girl the shell of the mollusk, and it instantly turns into a plate, Cup or something similar.

Small children want to be adults, and the sooner the better. And they are right in their desire.

Ability to learn new facts is inversely proportional to the age.

And again I repeat the classical truth: you can teach a child all they know of themselves. We already know that a child can easily unavailable for an adult to learn a few languages.

I'm young, I put a lot of effort to learn French, but I can't make any proper French proposals, And I didn't put absolutely no effort to learn English, but write in this language books, which are read by millions of people. Languages consist of facts, which are called words. These facts, in their hundreds of thousands. Ability to learn new facts is inversely proportional to the age. The older we get, the more difficult it becomes to accept new facts.

To teach year-old child is much easier than six years. And six months is easier than one year. Ask yourself - how many poems you learned over the past year and now can recite? One or none. And remember nursery rhymes that you were taught when you wasn't six years. So five pieces-you will surely be able to quote. And was it worth it to you any papers or sleepless nights? The younger you are, the easier it is for you to remember new information. However, most people believe that with age we become brighter and gifted than. In this case, they just confuse talent with wisdom. In this, we really have an advantage over children.

Yes, our Institute is able to inspire awe and children, and their parents. But there is nothing mystical - we just practice that well do the trick. And if you want to talk about mysticism, such feelings can inspire only the human brain and the most gifted of its owners - small children. However, despite all the love, admiration and respect that we feel for our children, we have not seen so wise two-year-old kid, who'd managed not to drown or not to fall out of the window, left unattended by their parents. The concept of "wisdom" is simply not applicable to children. They are born with no wisdom, no knowledge. But with the birth of their ability to grasp the new growing as rapidly as the rocket soars up. And, like the rocket, this amazing ability reaches its highest point, then stops. To six years its growth has been virtually zero.

But gradually begins to rise curve of wisdom, and we can even assume that she first declares itself precisely in six years. All this can be visualized in the following diagram.

Curves abilities and wisdom

So, the ability to learn increases and then rapidly decreases, but at the same time begins to gently increase wisdom. For six years these two curves meet. At the point of their meeting children's ability to perceive information without any effort reaches its limit, and actually stops any significant growth of the brain. But wisdom is only beginning to develop and gradually increases throughout the remainder of life. So what and how much you can study for these magnificent six years of life? All that counts.

Year-old child to teach lighter than seven years.

Reading is nothing like training a large number of facts, called words, and we already know how much easier year-old child learns by hearing a new language than it takes seven years.

But to teach the child the written language even easier than oral. The written word always remains the same, but the spoken word can be pronounced with the accent, vaguely or too quickly.

I mentioned how poor my knowledge of spoken French. But I can read French Newspapers. Of course, I don't know all the words and barely understand the long phrase, but catch the merits of the case. But if the same French newspaper to read for me, I can't understand almost anything. This naturally - foreign words easier to perceive by sight, not hearing.

To teach a year-old baby to perceive the language by ear, you must meet three conditions. Words to be spoken loudly, clearly and repeatedly. The mother instinctively understand this, so speak with their children loudly and clearly, repeating each phrase several times. "Come to Mama, come to Mama, come to Mama," and the child finally goes to the mother.

In fact, in this way the child develops auditory analyzers, i.e. paths that connect the ear to the brain. This process by its nature is neurophysiological. Exactly the same is the process of perception of the meaning of words by sight. So here it is necessary to observe three indispensable conditions. The written word should be large, clear and it must be shown repeatedly.

But with this-the problems arise. Open any book or newspaper and you will immediately verify that the font is too shallow for childish underdeveloped optic terminations. This has two significant consequences.

For ten thousand years we kept a written language secret from children who are linguistic geniuses. The visual end of our children are developing much slower than their hearing endings. But any organs develop only during use.

Remember that finishing touch takes up the entire back part of the brain. In the last Chapter we discuss the problem of the importance of the use of the senses for their formation and development.

Year-old child to learn to read more easily than seven years.

That is why one third of our students range in age from seven to seventeen years and could not learn to read in school. They just took it too late. The miracle is not that they never learned to read, this is the problem. The miracle is that two thirds of the students were able to learn this, You know that some medical schools offer their students first learn a little reading, having corrective reading course? If this does not scare you, then I don't know what you could be frightened.

Although it is fairly obvious, but to teach a child to read before he goes to school, we have already that he was not among those unfortunate that it never will learn.

One-year-old child will learn the basics of knowledge about the world, than it will make seven.

For the same reasons, which we just talked about, for a child it is very important to get an encyclopaedic knowledge on the most extensive range of subjects. This will help him to become more educated when he starts school.

Moreover, it will teach him not to be afraid of school, as the ability to swim teaches us not to be afraid of water. In the 18th Chapter, we will discuss how to give encyclopedic knowledge.

Year-old child to teach mathematics more easily than seven years. To make it easier and faster for the same reasons that we discussed above. Knowledge of mathematics is very useful to your child when he starts school. How to teach it, we will tell in the 19th Chapter. If you teach your child to read, count and give him an encyclopedic knowledge, thereby you:

  • will instill in him a love of mathematics, which he will keep for life;
  • will give him an advantage in learning different subjects;
  • will develop his ability and intelligence;
  • contribute to the growth and development of his brain.

And finally, you'll just make him happy.

Children who are allowed to learn at that age when it is easier to make, no time for boredom, irritation, frustration that arise when they lack parental attention. Anyway, they lead a happy life. They are similar to adults, although children are. It is easier to make and maintain friends than other children. Such children can be easily distinguished from all the rest - they are capable, confident, polite and calm. Year-old child is easier to perceive information than seven years.

Do you have a favorite topic that you can tell your child? So go ahead, do it! He will master it surprisingly quickly and deeply. You love bird watching, history, water skiing, Japanese language, playing guitar, turtles, running, photography? Then think about the best way you will be able to convey to your child. For three years, he will understand all this and love what you do. And twenty-one year he will become a leading figure in science or champion in the sport, if only he wants.

Young children acquire information with speed, affecting our imagination. You just let him start and stand back. If you tell your child the facts, he will find those rules that they follow.

This is the function that is contained in every human brain, and to verify this is very simple: you tell the child the set of information, and he will find the laws they obey.

Those errors that children make in grammar, are an excellent example. This apparent paradox was discovered by the Russian writer Korney Chukovsky in his book "From two to five. Three-year-old child looks out the window and said, "Here comes postlist". "Who?" - ask them if you. "Postlist," answered the child. You look out the window and see the postman. You laugh from this error, and you tell the child that this person is called the postman. But where does the child took this strange word "postlist"? He obviously couldn't hear it from anyone from adults. So from where?

I thought about it for twenty-five years and came to the conclusion that there is only one answer. Three-year-old mentally overlooked your vocabulary and came to the conclusion that if there are such activities as Smoking, wearing, diving, teaching, etc. and by appending the suffix "player" formed of occupational titles, why should it be otherwise in the case of a person carrying the mail? If there is a smoker, porter, diver, podmolik, why not be postlist? And after all, this is a great achievement on the part of the child!

When you do the last time I mentally reviewed the language, trying to find in it any laws? I guess I won't be mistaken if I say that you did it at the age of three. So, we say to the child that he was wrong, that it is not "postlist"and the postman. Yes, the child made a mistake in the word, but correctly identified the rule. And he was absolutely right in the open for them the law of grammar. Another thing is that the Russian language does not always follow logical rules. But isn't it a miracle has made our child?

If you teach a child the laws, then he is unlikely to find support these laws facts.

We adults tend to share all the information of two types : concrete and abstract. Under specific we mean what we understand and what can be easily explained. Under abstract we mean what we don't understand and therefore difficult or impossible to explain, And then we insist that a child should be taught abstractions!

But the child has the amazing ability to the discovery of the laws, if only we will let him know the facts. But it is impossible to detect the specific facts, if we teach only one rules, which are often abstractions. In my opinion, the best definition of science is: "Science is the branch of knowledge that deals with the totality of facts, classified so as to show the validity of the laws." This definition is an excellent explanation of what approach to knowledge held by the child. First of all, and without the slightest effort he learns an enormous number of facts, and then organize them to discover the laws they obey.

It turns out that to solve the problems the child has the same metol, and scientists. If I was offered one word to name the most important quality of a genius, then that word would be "curiosity". Scientists and geniuses are very curious. The same can be said about children. Small children are the same scientists. For the first three years of life, they learn more facts than the rest of his life.

The staff of our Institute claimed something like thirty years ago, when most people thought it was stupid. Now, apparently, this fact has no objection. And that's the truth, whatever has been said about it!

For the first six years of life, children learn three times more than for the rest of my life. And there is nothing strange - just kids doing what they love. The word "knowledge" is not a synonym for the word "education". Education begins at six years, knowledge - from the moment of birth. Children are the true luminaries of knowledge. They are limited only by the amount of material that allows them to learn, and in what form it is presented. The first six years of life is a time of occurrence of geniuses.

During those same six years is mainly the formation of the brain. Consider how the size of the head. At conception, no head yet, there is only one fertilized cell. Nine months later a baby has a head size of 35 cm in circumference. To two and a half years its size increases to 50 cm, twenty-one year he is 55 see

How amazingly fast the brain grows and how fast this growth stops, clearly show the following figures:

9 months - 35 cm

30 months (2.5 years) to 21 months longer than 15 cm more

252 months (21) 231 month more than 5 cm more

Before the child turns six years, it's easy to make a genius.

And it will be a great success both for himself and for his parents. Unfortunately, after six years to make baby genius is extremely difficult. In short, the value of the first six years of life cannot be overstated.

Age sensitivity is "inherent in a particular age period optimal combination of conditions for the development of certain mental properties or processes." "Premature or delayed in relation to the period of the age of sensitivity training may be insufficient, which adversely affects the development of the psyche." (Psychology. The truth is that mothers know about their children more than anyone else, and just two hundred years ago they were the only competent experts in children's issues. Without any help from teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, obstetricians, pediatricians, they managed to lead us out of the caves, And to inform the present century, bearing the proud name of "atomic era".
